The Ishasha Valley transboundary ecosystem is part of the Greater Virunga Landscape and is one of the most biodiverse landscapes on the planet; it is also one of the most threatened. Studies have shown that its large mammal populations have severely declined over the past 25 years. Poaching, habitat destruction, and proximity to armed conflict zones have challenged the region’s conservation efforts, with large mammals such as lions, elephants, and hippos paying the highest price.
